Planning
Get planning zone data for individual land parcels across Australia from a single source. Choose a national dataset or select a smaller area of interest.
Geoscape Planning provides information about the type of development that may occur at a land parcel.
It describes the planning zone codes at a granular level across Australia. And includes a direct link to the responsible state or local government planning authority.
Geoscape Planning data connects to Geoscape Cadastre to create a spatial representation of planning information at a parcel level.
What data is available?
Geoscape Planning provides detailed planning information for over 11 million land parcels across Australia. The information for each parcel includes:
- Zone code
- Primary zone description defining the zone
- Secondary zone description detailing further information about the zone
- National zone classification
- Source of the planning definition
- URL link to the relevant planning scheme.
The zone codes can be used to determine the type of development that may occur. The primary and secondary zone descriptions add meaning to the zone code. And the national zone classification ensures a consistent description of planning zones across Australia.
The data source and URL attributes are an easy reference to the relevant planning authority for further information on the restrictions and permitted activities associated with the development of a site.

How is Geoscape Planning created?
Planning zone data is sourced from state, territory and local governments. Zone codes vary across these jurisdictions.
Geoscape Planning aggregates the data at a national level. It assigns a planning zone code and description to each land parcel based on the intersection of cadastral parcels and planning zone boundaries. The national zone attribute is added for consistency of planning information across Australia.
Geoscape Planning is refreshed each quarter to align with our latest cadastre data. Planning data is updated twice yearly.
How can you use Planning data?
Geoscape Planning can be used to assess the development potential of a location. When combined with Geoscape Cadastre data, it can be spatially represented and analysed.
The URL attribute will direct you to each local government or state planning instrument or scheme for more information about the planning classification for each location.
Urban design & planning
Use the detailed zoning information in Geoscape Planning to guide site selection and research the viability and impact of a proposed development. It offers national zone data from a single source.
Proptech
Enhance your property solution with granular planning information. Enable your clients to understand a site in more detail when analysing locations for a new retail store or sites for property development.
Government
Planning information indicates how Australia could be developed. Use it as a framework for modelling potential growth in population, housing, industry and services and their impacts nationally.
